Chip Materials & Chemicals

The wafers, chemicals and consumable parts used to make AI chips

Heat (est.) Spend (est.)

Low-Dk glass cloth, HVLP copper foil and ABF are genuinely short, though the shortage is concentrated in a few grades rather than across materials.

AI accelerators, HBM and optical chips consume exceptionally pure wafers, patterning materials, gases and packaging chemicals. Suppliers win through contamination control, process performance and long qualification cycles; a material can be critical even when it represents a small part of chip cost.

Why now

HBM stacking and GAA logic raise demand for selective chemistry, thin-film precursors and package polymers. EUV power increases drive new pellicles and resists, while InP expansion follows AI optics demand. Tightness is product-specific; mature wafer markets remain uneven.

Silicon & Compound Wafers

300 mm silicon and SOI wafers feed AI logic and HBM fabs, while InP epitaxy serves optical links. AI-grade demand is stronger than mature-wafer demand; defect control, crystal purity and customer qualification determine usable capacity.

Quartz, SiC & Ceramic Materials

High-purity quartz sand feeds wafer-growth crucibles and fused quartzware; SiC and ceramic parts withstand fab plasma and heat. Semiconductor qualification is distinct from solar-grade quartz, and concentrated qualified feedstock adds risk as wafer and AI package capacity expands.
