BlackRock, Inc.
BlackRock is a New York-based asset manager and the world's largest, with $15.3 trillion in assets under management as of June 2026. It is a buy-side firm and does not run a sell-side equity research business.
Company history
Larry Fink and seven partners founded the firm in 1988 as Blackstone Financial Management, a fixed-income manager backed by the Blackstone Group. It took the BlackRock name in 1992, was sold by Blackstone to PNC in a deal completed in 1995, and listed on the NYSE in 1999. Mergers with Merrill Lynch Investment Managers in 2006 and Barclays Global Investors, owner of iShares, in 2009 built its scale; it added Global Infrastructure Partners in 2024 and HPS Investment Partners in 2025.

Research
BlackRock's research serves its own portfolios and clients rather than the sell-side market: the BlackRock Investment Institute publishes macro and market outlooks, and in-house analysts support its active equity, fixed-income and private-markets strategies. Its Aladdin platform supplies portfolio and risk analytics to institutional investors.
