Edward Jones is a St. Louis-based retail brokerage and wealth-management partnership serving individual investors through nearly 15,000 branch offices in the United States and Canada as of 2026; its in-house research department issues long-horizon Buy, Hold and Sell opinions for its financial advisors.
Company history
Edward D. Jones Sr. founded the firm in St. Louis in 1922 and merged it in 1943 with Whitaker & Co., a St. Louis brokerage dating to 1871. His son Ted Jones established the first branch office in Mexico, Missouri, in 1957 and, as managing partner from 1968, built the one-advisor branch network. Penny Pennington became the sixth managing partner in 2019; the firm remains a private partnership.

Research
The research department publishes Buy, Hold and Sell opinions, judged on total return potential against industry peers over three to five years, for use by the firm's financial advisors. A Hold can also flag a special situation, such as a pending merger, that warrants no action. Since January 1993 it has maintained a U.S. Stock Focus List made up solely of Buy-rated stocks.
