Cantor Fitzgerald is a privately held New York investment bank and brokerage controlled by the Lutnick family. Its equity research covers more than 500 companies, concentrated in healthcare and technology.
Company history
Bernard Gerald Cantor and John Fitzgerald founded the firm in 1945; in 1972 it became the first electronic marketplace for U.S. government securities. Howard Lutnick was named chief executive in 1991 and rebuilt the firm after the September 11, 2001 attacks killed 658 employees at its World Trade Center offices. It spun off BGC Partners in 2004. In 2025 Lutnick became U.S. Commerce Secretary; his son Brandon became chairman and three co-chief executives took over Cantor Fitzgerald & Co.
