Barclays PLC
British universal bank headquartered in London whose investment bank publishes equity research on about 1,800 stocks across the Americas and Europe, with a U.S. equities platform built on the Lehman Brothers businesses it bought in 2008.
Company history
Barclays traces its origins to a goldsmith bank opened on Lombard Street, London, in 1690; in 1896 20 banks amalgamated as Barclay and Company Limited. In 1986 it formed the investment bank Barclays de Zoete Wedd, and in 1997 agreed to sell BZW's equities and corporate finance arms to Credit Suisse First Boston, keeping the debt business as Barclays Capital. Its 2008 purchase of Lehman Brothers' North American businesses restored U.S. equities and research; the unit now operates as Barclays Investment Bank.
