Oppenheimer & Co. Inc. is the New York-based broker-dealer of NYSE-listed Oppenheimer Holdings, combining wealth management with investment banking, trading and equity research. Its analysts rate stocks against the S&P 500 on an Outperform, Perform and Underperform scale.
Company history
Oppenheimer traces its lineage to Fahnestock & Co., founded in New York in 1881, and to Oppenheimer & Co., a broker-dealer partnership formed in 1950 and named for Max E. Oppenheimer. CIBC bought Oppenheimer & Co. in 1997; in 2003 Fahnestock Viner Holdings acquired CIBC Oppenheimer's U.S. private-client and asset-management businesses and adopted the Oppenheimer name. In January 2008 it acquired CIBC World Markets' U.S. investment banking and equities businesses. Rob Lowenthal succeeded his father Albert as chief executive in May 2025.
