MKM Partners was an institutional equity research, sales and trading firm headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, serving hedge funds and long-only managers. Roth Capital Partners acquired it in 2023, and its research continued under the ROTH MKM name.
Company history
Brothers Thomas and Steven Messina, formerly of A.B. Watley, founded MKM Partners in Stamford in 2001. The firm opened offices in Boston, Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dallas and Austin and added derivatives, event-driven, technical and high-yield offerings. Roth Capital Partners agreed to buy it in August 2022 and closed on 31 January 2023, with MKM chief executive Sagar Sheth becoming CEO of ROTH MKM; MKM's broker-dealer registration ended in May 2023.

Research
MKM combined fundamental equity research with macroeconomics, technical analysis, derivatives strategy, event-driven commentary and alternative research. In early 2013 it had about 100 employees, 22 of them in research, with clients split roughly 55% hedge funds and 45% long-only funds and family offices. It rated stocks Buy, Neutral or Sell on expected absolute moves of 15% over 12 months.
